How Much Is Labour Controlled Croydon Council In Debt?

The Croydon council has £1.5bn of debts and £7m in reserves, leading to its Section 114 Notice in November. So is it any wonder we see the lives of its tenants living without working toilets, persistent water leaks flooding properties and black mould coating the walls?

Those are just some of the terrible conditions council tenants in South Norwood are facing. The shocking images of walls caked in thick mould and sodden carpets broadcast on ITV News led to the chief executive of Shelter branding it the “worst council house conditions” she had ever seen.

Croydon Council says it has now launched an investigation and tenants of the two worst-affected flats have been moved to temporary accommodation.

The scenes raise serious questions about how people could be allowed to live in such conditions in 21st century Britain, how the council failed to spot what’s happened and whether others in Croydon are suffering in silence.

Could it happen in West Lancashire? Hopefully not? Is it just a coincidence that WLBC is advertising for a Building Surveyor, a day after Croydon? Probably not. West Lancashire Borough Council owns and manages circa 6,000 homes across the Skelmersdale and Ormskirk areas.  The Property Services Team maintain those homes via a proactive repairs service and capital investment programmes, ensuring they are safe, warm and well maintained for our customers.

The opportunity has arisen to join the Property Services Team as a Building Surveyor within the Investment Team on a 12 months fixed term contract. Pay is £27,741 to £29,577. Apply by 5th April.

Our Labour Council is currently running a loss making Develpment Company which should be wound down as Croydon are doing with theirs and was also all set to embark on large commercial property investments until the problems of some councils came to light. There’s no “free lunch”.
