The “Bollocks To Brexit” Party

Is “talking Bollocks to West Lancashire”?

The Liberal Democrat Party, which might best drop the “Democrat” bit, suggests “Brexit is making the staffing crisis at Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust even worse, the Liberal Democrats have warned. Figures published by the party reveal that 17 EU staff working as nurses and midwives at Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust have already left the health service this year; in the three years since the Brexit vote, 58 NHS staff from the EU have left the local trust.

“Staff departures from Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust are part of a worrying national trend: over 3,250 NHS staff from the EU have left the health service so far this year, including 1,116 nurses.

“The data, based on responses to Freedom of Information requests across 50 NHS hospital trusts, reveals that: • Over 11,600 NHS staff from the EU have left the health service in the three years since the Brexit vote, including 4,783 nurses. • Over 3,252 NHS staff from the EU have left the health service so far this year (Jan – Oct 2019), including 1,116 nurses. In normal parlance that’s called job mobility!

The Liberal Democrats have warned that shortages of NHS staff will get even worse under Conservative plans that would see EU nationals charged a “nurse tax” worth thousands of pounds to come and work for the NHS.

Nurses and other health professionals from the EU do not currently pay any fees to come and work for the NHS. However, under Conservative proposals, visa fees and the NHS surcharge would be extended to EU workers, meaning an EU nurse would have to pay £1,089 to work in the NHS for the first year and £3,589 for five years.

Liberal Democrat candidate for West Lancashire, Simon Thomson

has said “These shocking figures reveal the damage Brexit has already done to the NHS in West Lancashire and it’s set to get worse under the Tories.

“The Conservatives’ obsession with Brexit has already cost our NHS dearly. Now the Tories want to clobber hardworking NHS staff with a nurse tax that will cost them thousands to come and work in the NHS. It’s no wonder that NHS staff from the EU in West Lancashire are leaving their posts. Unfortunately, it’s patient care that will suffer as a result.

“Only the Liberal Democrats will stop Brexit to protect our NHS. We will make clear to staff from the EU that they are valued, tackle the staffing crisis and invest an extra £35 billion in health and social care”.

Simon Thomson is a Coppull resident

and an active member of Coppull Parish Council. He is the councillor for Coppull West and has responsibility for the area covering Spendmore Lane , Darlington Street, John Street, Hewlett Street, Tanyard Close, Park Road, German Lane and Bentham Street.

He is a member of the Liberal Democrats and has acted as a party chairman in the recent past, as well as being a candidate in borough council elections. Currently on the executive committee of the Chorley Liberal Democrats, Simon would describe himself as being on the ‘social liberal’ left wing of the party.

“Ormskirk is home to the great rail divide in West Lancashire, one that sees residents who travel towards Liverpool having access to a frequent, reliable, and relatively affordable service, whilst residents who want to travel from Ormskirk to Preston, or from Burscough to Manchester, have to deal with Northern Rail.

“In order to improve transport links in West Lancashire I would work with all stakeholders to assess the feasibility of Merseyrail running the line from Ormskirk to Preston, which has the potential to be beneficial economically, whilst also calling for Northern Rail to be stripped of the rest of their franchise and for far greater investment in local rail services in the North West”.

No thoughts from Libdems for the other great divide, that of discrimination of elderly and disabled residents of West Lancashire by Merseytravel/Merseyrail for off-peak cheap travel? No, guess not! Why would an outsider bother?
