Political Nepotism? Political Patronage?
When the well of local party political talent dries up, what comes next? Nepotism? Patronage? Remember Aughton Park May 2015? “And I do hereby declare that Marilyn May Westley is duly elected”. Nepotistically favoured? Of course we remember.
And still in Aughton Park, the by-election, on Thursday 8 June 2017, “And I do hereby declare that Doreen Joan Stephenson is duly elected”. Stephenson, electorally kicked out of her home village of Halsall for incompetence, but in receipt of patronage becomes a second hand replacement doled out to Aughton Park?
Micky Mouse manifesto
What, you might wonder, is 11 and a half inches by 16 and a half inches, double sided in glorious colour, no expense spared. It comes delivered free to your door whether you want it or not. It’s the Aughton Park Ward News,
the Micky Mouse manifesto from the Conservatives for the aforesaid Cllr Marylin Westley, now seeking re-election. She must surely have four years of successful endeavour to tell us about?
Well no, the spectacular glossy claim to be “Aughton Park Ward News” is anything but news. It seems Cllr M Westley has nothing to say about Aughton Park, not even after those four years!
There is a picture of Long Lane
that doesn’t tell readers it IS Long Lane. She doesn’t tell the story of how dangerous Long Lane is. She doesn’t mention the untiring work being done by residents to solve the dangers of Long Lane. She mentions Prescot Road, in passing, and that is the sum of her “Strong voice for the residents of Aughton Park Ward”.
You couldn’t make it up? Well somebody did! They made up the mantra of “Marilyn cares passionately about the greenbelt and is totally opposed to Labour’s new Local Plan and the hugely negative impact it would have on Aughton and indeed the whole of West Lancashire”.
Has she or her party forgotten, perhaps conveniently, why the non-political Aughton Residents Group, ARG, was formed, in 2012? “The developers REDROW proposed the building of some 250 dwellings and WAINHOMES some 150 dwellings (Total 400 dwellings). The Aughton Residents’ Group, ARG (2012), was formed to oppose those proposed developments and has done so at various Public Inquiries and Appeal Hearings”.
Some people might forget the times when “Aughton residents are calling for Councillor David Westley to resign after slur” after he called the two-year campaign to keep Parrs Lane in the greenbelt ‘a waste of time’ and alleged that door to door campaigners had told lies.
After Colin Atkinson
chairman for the Aughton Residents Group (2012) raised the issue of the formulation of the neighbourhood plan to discuss the future of Aughton at public question time at the Aughton Parish Council meeting on Monday December 9, Lancashire County Councillor D Westley, who represents Aughton and Downholland told Colin Atkinson that campaigners had wasted two years talking to the Borough Council.
Never forget what he said “The campaign was a disaster, lies were told door to door and the campaign was a waste of time.” He then walked out of the meeting at Aughton Village Hall amid shouts that the campaigners had not lied, jeers and calls for his resignation. Colin Atkinson described his behaviour as childish and unprofessional – and said that he expects an apology from Councillor Westley for his ‘unwarranted’ remarks. He said: “I attended a meeting about the formation of the neighbourhood plan under the Localism Act with Councillor Westley, Councillor O’Toole and Councillor Grant on Wednesday December 4 and they said that the matter was a issue to be raised with the Aughton Parish Council but tonight Aughton Parish Council asked Councillor Westley to advise on it.
”He took exception to me mentioning that it could be just four years until Parrs Lane could be built upon and I expect an apology for his unprofessional behaviour“. It’s not on record that Mr Atkinson ever received the apology!
In Wacky Races Long Lane
will its residents be queuing up at the polling station to restore Cllr Westley as their elected representative after reading her useless manifesto? Probably. But if this is a “strong voice for Aughton Park” God help us if we ever have a “weak” one!
