Stunned And Gutted In Hesketh-with-Becconsall?

It seems that South Ribble Conservatives, who, you may recall, dumped Wyre and now former WLBC Cllr Moon on us in 2016, are ecstatic with their Moon replacement.

One of their Cllrs writes “Congratulations to Joan Witter on a stunning victory this evening. She will be a fantastic champion for Hesketh-with-Becconsall at @Westlancsbc …”

And the South Ribble Con Party twitter claims “The residents of Hesketh-with-Becconsall will be waking up to hear the good news this morning. #Labour and #ComradeCorbyn will be gutted. They pulled all their team in from around the north-west…and the local residents told them that socialism wasn’t for them”.

So how stunning was this 2018 victory? Decide for yourselves. Moon 2016 had 578 votes and Cllr Witter was elected with 510 votes. Witter lost 18.5% of the last Tory vote!

And how gutted will Labour be? Their vote increased from 333 in 2016 to 431 in 2018, gaining 4%. Even worse for South Ribble Cons, the combined vote for Labour and Independent (295) was 726. As often happens, politicians and political parties shoot their mouths off without looking at the real deal. South Ribble Cons have done just that? Of course they have, as Cllr Michael Green  tweeted from South Ribble Tories “#Labour have fought a dirty campaign, but Joan’s passion for the local community has shone through. Wishing her a successful outcome”. She got the outcome, will she be forever blighted by the memory of Moon who was held in contempt for his two-hatting? And the Independent candidate won 23.8%.
