Talking Point

We see the election leaflets for the May local elections are proliferating, and one has already caught my eye because the candidate for re-election, OWL Ian Davis, has apparently persuaded the Borough Chief Executive to leave Derby Street Towers  and tour Derby Ward with him.

This is of interest because the highly paid CE used to issue a personal bulletin to staff, councillors, and other selected recipients of when and where she was always “pleased” to have met influential people. “West Lancs Now” was not for public consumption, but leaks being leaks, “West Lancs Now” always reached WLR and we duly published it as “Meetings Bloody Meetings”. After all, the public pay for the post of CE and the public should know if it is value for money. But recently the “Meetings Bloody Meetings” leak was evidently mended, and now we are in the mushroom method of communications, kept in the dark etc.

So back to the tour of Derby ward and 47 issues were identified, with 16 already addressed. Rats in the town centre, tree ownership issues, street cleansing, pot-holed conditions of local roads were all identified.

This success of Cllr Davis  is of immense interest to council tax payers. Here, for example, in Aughton but it applies everywhere, we have similar issues, and whereas Cllr Davis has still not been in post for a year his example shames councillors who have served for over 30 years without apparently bringing the top officer out of Derby Street to solve a single issue. Five of them here, two would do, fire the rest!
