Greenwood Good News

The business base built by West Lancashire Borough Council to help meet demand for smaller factory units in Skelmersdale is fully occupied as it celebrated its first anniversary of opening for business. The £1.7 million Greenwood Business Centre was officially opened last autumn and provides 11 high quality, new industrial units.

West Lancashire Borough Council developed the Greenwood Business Centre at Gorsey Place, Skelmersdale, to help meet demand for smaller factory units suitable for light industry, manufacturing and distribution and help create new jobs. Some of the units were snapped up by local businesses even before the centre was completed. Now they are all full and the businesses are enjoying their new purpose-built working environment.

Councillor Ian Moran, Leader of West Lancashire Borough Council, was delighted to visit the Greenwood Business Centre on its first anniversary and meet the businesses working there for a year. “They all seem really happy with their premises and I wish them every success in the future. The Council is ambitious for the economy and the project complies with priorities in the Council Plan to retain and grow jobs and encourage business and wealth. The Greenwood Business Centre shows how the Council provides great value for money. It is boosting the local economy and the rental revenue will help the Council balance its budget”.

ECS Sunbeds and Leisure was one of the first companies to sign a lease for the units and moved in on the first day the units were available. Shirley Hewitt, ECS Sunbeds and Leisure Finance Director, said: “We moved to the Business Centre because we wanted bigger and more modern premises to facilitate our growing needs, but we did not want to move from Skelmersdale because of the close proximity to the motorway network. So when we first saw the plans we put our name down for the two largest units. The units and location are ideal for what we need and we are continuing to thrive as a business”.

The other businesses based there are: Connolly Electrical Contractors, E-Tech Components Ltd; Extreme Low Energy Ltd; Motion Graphix Ltd; North West Express Ltd; Stonbury Ltd; The Premier Supply Group and Pro-Fit Fitted Bedrooms.

I am a pensioner. I was a strong supporter of the rights of elderly and disabled residents of West Lancashire to receive equal treatment from the old Tory WLBC that unfortunately did not agree, leading to the social exclusion of some immobile disabled residents. My personal suggestion of honouring the County Regiment led to us having probably the proudest day ever in West Lancashire, with the help of Cllr Adrian Owens who wrote "You will be pleased to learn that this evening the motion passed unanimously. Colonel Amlot from the Regiment was accorded a standing ovation and we look forward to a parade and march through Ormskirk next year. Thank you". After the Parade I wrote to Cllr Owens "I was reading through the emails we exchanged after I made the suggestion to honour our County Regiment. As you said today, we got there in the end, and what an end? This celebration of our Regiment was quite simply, as my original mail said, the greatest honour of all. To see all these young people who risk their lives for us was so moving. Little did I know what Council could do and how our residents would react to it all. Well, we should all be so proud of this great day. I know I am".
