Charitable Status Achieved After 13 Years

West Lancashire Community Leisure Limited (WLCLL)  has finally achieved its aim to become a Registered Charity. It’s only taken 13 years or so after its original intention to do so around 2004. As a WLBC councillor wrote in 2011 “I make no claims to expertise on the tax advantages of having charitable status, but I do know that one of the key selling points when the Trust was established to manage (officially at least) the Serco contract for the five leisure centres in West Lancashire, was that it could apply to be a charity and that the tax advantages would mean saving or cost efficiencies for the council, and therefore be a better deal for the local taxpayer. It seems to me that the benefits to local taxpayers may not have been at the forefront of the Trust’s consideration for the last six years, since no application for charitable status has ever, to the best of my knowledge, been made”.

Nor was it until 12 July 2016 and the good people who run the Trust are delighted to have made it at long last, as this entry in the Chairperson’s Report states [click to read]. So what savings or cost benefits have we local taxpayers lost in those 13 years and what will we receive from now on? Your guess is as good as mine!

Not all is sweetness and light though. Once again the Trust makes claims that “The green-keeping team are starting to cut and fertilise the 9 hole course and it is possible that this could be operational in the late summer of 2017 and the footgolf in late 2018”  [click to read]. Pie in the sky! These pictures [click to enlarge] make  a lie of the “cutting and fertilizing” claim , as there have been no repairs to the deep crevices and there is no new topsoil to cover the exposed landfill rubble. Perhaps fertilizing gravel  is a new golf course phenomenon?
