Burglar banned from most of Aughton and Ormskirk

Some great news for law and order, as a convicted burglar who targeted the homes of older people has been banned indefinitely from the built up areas of Aughton and Ormskirk. Preston Crown Court imposed a Criminal Behaviour Order on Stephen Hughes, aged 45, of Field Lane Fazakerley, after he was convicted of five counts of burglary. CCTV cameras captured him breaking into sheltered accommodation complexes in West Lancashire. One of Mr Hughes’ victims was a 93-year-old woman.

Hughes was jailed for five years, and the court also imposed a Criminal Behaviour Order against him, the first of its kind obtained by Lancashire Police in collaboration with West Lancashire Borough Council. This orders Hughes: Not to engage in behaviour that causes, or is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to any other person; Not to enter the perimeters of Ormskirk or Aughton (West Lancashire) as specified in the Order and not to enter any sheltered housing scheme within the borough of West Lancashire; Not to carry an iron bar or crow bar of any description in a public place.

The Council worked with in partnership with Lancashire Police to obtain the order which will continue indefinitely after Hughes has been released from prison. If convicted of breaching the order he faces imprisonment for up to five years or a fine or both.

Councillor Kevin Wright , portfolio holder for Community Safety, said “This is an excellent example of how the Council and the Police work in partnership to try and protect the community. This burglar targeted sheltered schemes, causing fear to older residents. I am pleased the court has imposed a stiff sentence and the criminal behaviour order to keep him away from sheltered housing schemes in West Lancashire”.
