Why Has Aughton Parish Council Allowed Virgin Media Time At Its AGM?

Why indeed. It’s bad enough that our local NHS community care and urgent care contracts worth £65,000,000 have been given to Virgin Care, to “deliver a quality service for our local community”. Now, on the APC  agenda is an item “Virgin Media Network Proposed Expansion Plans In The Ormskirk Area – a short presentation from Kyle Dodd (Community Liaison Officer)”. Again, why?

Perhaps we are to be told about a report that “Virgin Media has launched an internal investigation and suspended staff over concerns they may have exaggerated the progress of its £3bn Project Lightning network expansion project. In a regulatory disclosure, the cable operator’s US-listed parent company Liberty Global said four staff had been removed from their posts pending investigations that may result in their dismissal.

The company discovered evidence that 142,000 homes and businesses in line to be connected to its network required more work than it had previously reported. Liberty Global had believed construction work to lay new cables was substantially complete and that the new lines only required power and plugging into its street cabinets, work it told investors would be complete in the first quarter of this year. Instead, further construction is required, it said, and the new homes and businesses will not be able to subscribe to cable broadband until summer.

Liberty Global told investors it had “initiated a review of the records underlying the construction status of the inactive premises and the circumstances that led to the overstatement of their construction progress”. It added “In connection with this review, four Virgin Media employees have been suspended and removed from their posts and employment investigations are ongoing. Pending the results of these investigations, disciplinary action may be taken against employees, including dismissal”.

As for the “Virgin Care” deal, surely there will be more care for profit for owner and shareholders than health care for patients? They all do it, United Health, Serco, taking public funds for private gain. It’s appalling.
