Lords Lampooned

This so-called “democracy” we inhabit is nothing of the kind. As local councillor Paul Greenall tweets “Abolish the Lords”, he asks “What democratic mandate does the House of Lords have” and he asks “Should the Conservatives pledge to abolish the House of Lords @ the next general election?”. abolishlords

As one recent abolition petitioner stated “It is my personal opinion that the House of Lords does not have a mandate to block the majority wishes of both the democratic people of the UK & the House of Commons to serve Article 50 now” and who might argue against the people? Well two of them come to mind almost immediately?

Unusually, step forward Lord Pigg and step forward Mrs Baroness Pigg his wife, well, to be truthful they are Hoggs, and as “hogs” are prone to hover around troughs it might seem more apt to view them as “pigs”. The House of Lords Piggery is well known as the finest old peoples’ rest home in London, attracting as it does a huge number of failed political deadbeats we, taxpayers, fund at £300 a day merely to attend. Ten minutes or ten hours, £300 a day.

M’Lord and Lady Pigg attract joint allowances from our taxes of £600 a day. M’Lord Pigg was once Douglas Hogg whose dalliances with House of Commons expense claims included the costs of having the moat cleared, piano tuned, and stable lights fixed at his country manor house. His expenses were so extensive that in 2004 he negotiated a special deal with the Commons fees office, which for several years automatically paid him a 12th of the annual allowance each month. In correspondence with officials, the Eton-educated barrister claimed this was necessary as the running costs of his estate were “greatly” in excess of the maximum permitted under MPs’ second home allowances, adding “It will certainly make my life a lot easier”. You bet it would!

Pigg defended his use of the additional costs allowance by saying that it was necessary to employ a “lady” and gardener to run the manor house while he and his wife Sarah, a life peer, were in their London town house. He added that he had acted within “both the letter and the spirit” of the rules while being paid more than £20,000 annually to run the estate. One of the highlights of this saga was that “Among the expenditure was nearly £18,000 paid to his gardener, a separate bill of almost £1,000 to have the lawn mowed regularly, and £671.17 for a mole catcher”  I don’t know about you but my gardener, me, mows the lawn within the job description!

Anyway M’Lord Pigg voted as Viscount Hailsham, his alias, in support of the Motion while M’Lady Pigg doesn’t seem to have attended or voted. The Lords don’t have to answer to the people. It’s time they did. Some people refer to it as the House of Cronies, Dodgy Donors and Has-Beens but never as a democratic chamber. So Cllr Greenall has my support in whatever efforts he makes to abolish it, starting with clipping the attendance allowances to the West Lancashire basic rate of £4,842 per annum.
