West Lancashire’s Own Local La-La Land

So far as is known, la-la land is a mental or fanciful state of someone who is not aware of what is really happening, a state of being out of touch with reality and thinking that things that are completely impossible might happen.

Read about some nominations for “La-La Land” awards , immediate thoughts are that Wally Westley lalawestley and his local party are in the running. Strange things like this do happen, and living in the area politically represented, (and the phrase is used loosely) by Wally Westley is one of them. In Wally’s la-la-land everybody is to blame but Wally himself. Back in 2010, I think it was, he was described officially as “Cllr David Westley, Cabinet Member for Finance and Performance Management” and since then we’ve had plentiful performance mismanagement, including his so-called defence of WLBC spending at that time of £1,200,000 on “experts” rather than on services for council tax payers, and of course his grotesque claims of “lies told door to door” in Aughton.

He has many claims to la-la-land fame, most recently when Cllr Greenall announced he was chosen to replace Wally as the candidate for West Lancashire East at next year’s county council, Wally announced he wasn’t, Greenall was duly selected, and Wally got the runners up prize of candidate for Ormskirk.

On another occasion Wally was interviewed about the poor retail occupancy in Skelmersdale being the worst in the country. The broadcast interview clearly showed his la-la-land state of being out of touch when he stated “I didn’t know that”.

He’s been in la-la-land during the pathetic demise of his party, led by him in a coup described elsewhere as “I [Adrian Owens] was elected Leader of the Conservative Group on the council by the 27-strong group of councillors in a secret ballot – one person, one vote. Two Conservative councillors wouldn’t accept that decision and immediately set about destabilising the Group. Regretfully, they were aided and abetted by the newly elected Deputy Leader, Councillor Westley who had just lost the Leadership Election”.

But probably his best la-la-land incident of all was his diatribe on his loss of the council to Labour. He claimed “The Council AGM saw the success of a left wing and unreformed socialist coup with the election of a new Labour Leader of the Council and the appointment of a Cabinet stuffed full with Trade Union activists. The Labour Group turned out to be something of a wolf in sheep’s clothing when they ditched their previous Leader Cllr Roger Bell, a moderate and former LibDem member. Any voter who voted for Rosie Cooper MP, another ex-LibDem, and thought her moderate politics were reflected in the Council’s Labour Group will be in for a nasty shock and may feel there has been a breach of the Trades Description Act”.

“He said Cllr Moran has already given a clear indication of his “socialist dogma” when in his acceptance speech he made reference to ‘growing the Council’. This followed on from the public statement by Cllr Wynn, Finance Portfolio Holder, which lamented the reduction the number of staff employed by the Council brought about by the necessary cost saving measures of the previous Conservative Administration. The Labour Group gained control of the council on the back of Rosie Cooper’s very professional and publicly funded PR team and without ever setting out a manifesto or declaring where they stand on the important local issues. The Conservative vote was squeezed by UKIP whose Parliamentary candidate, after being suspended for racist remarks has since joined the BNP, and OWL is less of a political party and more about failed political ambition together with an ill thought out set of policies designed to grab a headline than bear serious consideration. I was pleased to be re-elected Leader of the Conservative Group and am determined to hold the Labour Administration to account. The Conservatives will be an effective opposition and will fight tooth and nail to preserve the Council’s cost effective frontline services and resolutely resist Labour imposing unnecessary increases in Council Tax”.

So we feel West Lancashire’s own “la-la-land awards” la-la-land-title-1 go to Wally for worst councillor, worst council leader, worst exponent of sour grapes, worst choice of councillor (step forward Wyre Councillor Moon), worst exponent of two-hatting, worst exponent of nepotism, and if there is anything I’ve missed please add in the comments section.
