Once They’re Gone They’re Gone

You’ve all seen those “Once they’re gone they’re gone” adverts from sales spivs who need you to buy some cheap tat for a very quick turnover. But I never really expected the local Conservative Party to involve itself in such tactics, even in the depths of its current demise. I was once approached by Cllr Wally Westley, on 25 March 2013 actually, when Westley wrote me that “The best advice I can give your to protect the interests of your community is to vote and actively campaign for the Conservative at local elections. Just let me know if you would like me to send you a membership form”.

Well, perish the thought that he of all people might persuade me that was good advice, and of course I declined. They claim that “Being a member of West Lancashire Conservatives (WLCs) means that you have joined the most open and democratic political party in Britain. So open and democratic they elected a new leader in a secret ballot, one person, one vote. But two councillors refused to accept that decision, and as is widely known, they were aided and abetted by the newly elected deputy leader Wally Westley who had lost the leadership election. And it led to decisions being taken by a small clique from which ward councillors were excluded. So after all that, why should you believe that after the first three months of your membership, you will be entitled to a vote in meaningful local Party ballots?

But now I have received that very same “once they’re gone they’re gone” Tory plea. Two, in fact! This was the first. torybrand “A lot has happened over the last 12 months. But whilst we are getting on with the job of governing our country and delivering for the British people, Labour are divided and divisive. Whether it’s renewing our nuclear deterrent, securing our national finances, or even whether we should negotiate with ISIL terrorists, Labour are more interested in fighting amongst themselves than for the British people. Given the options above I wondered if, from what I have seen on the WLCA website and given recent local party history, they might wish to pay me to join. Apparently not, thank goodness! Wally Westley’s invitation of March 2013 had soon evaporated and on 19 October 2013 Westley wrote “Confessed to being somewhat amused by the receipt of an e-mail from John Hodson given he lives in Tarleton and is a Labour Councillor representing a Scott Ward and we had been discussing the effect on Aughton of the adopted Local Plan. Clearly you have been up to your usual trick of secretly copying in your friends in the Labour Party and this is clear evidence of your political agenda”. To which I replied “Will you now be offering your views on how and why you live in Halsall, represent Aughton, and support Derby ward? Remind me if you will, what have you offered to the Derby ward that you didn’t offer your own Borough ward of Aughton?” other than saying they are telling lies door to door?
