Abbey Lane Here We Come

Faced with the introduction of an annual charge of £30 to collect garden waste from next year, a policy that clearly discriminates against elderly and disabled residents on low incomes, one resident is trying out his towing skills. image1-1The outcome will eventually mean convoys of similar vehicles transporting green waste from many areas up to Abbey Lane Waste Centre. Sorry about any traffic hold-ups but needs must!

  1. This is a crazy idea – it will increase fly-tipping as well as problems with burning and bonfires as people try to dispose of their garden waste. I have a disabled mother who also receives benefits, so I guess she has to choose whether to eat or use her green bin?! I’m sure there are other things WLBC council could do to save money – what about dumping the idea of a very expensive park behind the railway station – there is no point in having one area of west Lancs pristine and the rest a mess!

    • Absolutely agree, it used to be heat or eat, still is, so now it’s heat, eat, or green bin for the less well off. Already mentioned the conservation area grants paid to private home owners, up to £2,000 plus £1,000 for garden improvements, no means testing, secret, and unlimited budget for it all. Madness!

  2. I wouldn’t be surprised if this wretched council of ours starts rationing the amount of green waste we bring to the Recycling centres in much the same way as it does with inert waste. 10 bags of rubble per year is a paltry amount, and an insult to rate payers.

    • Don’t give them ideas!

    • Put your garden waste in your grey bin – they can’t stop you. Appalling for the environment but they were warned!

      • It is against anything we have been doing for the environment, but austerity seems to be driving us into these desperate measures.
