Alderman Una

Last night at Council there was an Extraordinary Meeting “To consider the following: “That pursuant to their powers under Section 249(1) of the Local Government Act 1972, the Council do confer upon Mrs Una Atherley, the title of Honorary Alderman of the Borough of West Lancashire in recognition of the eminent services which she has rendered to the Council of the Borough of West Lancashire during her 25 years in which she was a Member of the Council.”

A principal council may, by a resolution passed by not less than two-thirds of the members voting thereon at a meeting of the council specially convened for the purpose with notice of the object, confer the title of honorary aldermen on persons who have, in the opinion of the council, rendered eminent services to the council as past members of that council, but who are not then councillors of the council.

You will notice this titular honour was awarded by the Council, not by popular vote of the electorate of Aughton. They weren’t even considered to have any view of it. Their view might have been different inasmuch as Mrs Atherley did not support the retention of the Town Green Police Station and voted with Wally westuna in support of the now tarnished Local Plan that will bring unwelcome major housing development on our finest Aughton agricultural land. It seems that 25 years membership of the Council suffices for the award. But isn’t 25 years of claiming allowances enough? Heavens above, that’s about £121,000 at the current rate of councillor allowance!

Aughton is likely to have even more aldermanic awards than thus far. Cllr O’Toole is still going strong even after having been a WLBC councillor since 1976 apart from a brief period in the 80s and being also a Lancashire County Councillor too. Just think, he could become a double hatted Alderman by an LCC award too! He would join such luminaries as Louise Ellman from 1998, and a whole batch of eleven created in 2014. Aldermanic madness!

And then there is Wally. By 2019 he will have 17 years of service. Surely that won’t be enough? But he does have staying powers, seeing off Adrian Owens  to obtain the Tory leadership. Aughton might well give him two more terms which will bring him to the magical 25 years, or his blundering party leadership might have itself caused a party coup. Only time will tell.
