Alderman Council

The borough will be holding its next Full Council meeting in October and will include an “Alderman Council” at which the former councillor for Aughton & Downholland Una Atherley will be endowed for her 25 years of service to our ward.

This is extremely bad timing for such an event, coming as it does just weeks after Wainhomes won its appeal for permission to drive its coach and horses through the Local Plan and build houses on Aughton’s green belt land against public opinion. Atherley voted for the “sound” Local Plan through all its stages and in particular supported it at the Aughton Parish Council.

And who can forget her opposition to our fight for the Aughton Police Station, finally saved by the intervention of Rosie Cooper MP rosieaughtpol and the Tenancy at Will agreed between Merseyrail and Lancashire police?

Aldermanic meetings were until recently hugely expensive for council tax payers, what with gifts and booze spent on receptions from “civic expenses”!

This award may be the forerunner of others. Recent councillor retirees may qualify by length of service. Perhaps the regular receipt of councillor allowances over 25 years ought to have been sufficient reward?
